As the annual Fall for Dance festival opened this season at New York City Center, the usual admonition to turn off those phones was missing. In its place was a request: Take them out. Shoot and tweet away!

There always a boisterous feeling at Fall for Dance, a 10 day affair that ended this weekend, in large part because it a smorgasbord of performances by 20 companies from around the globe. The $15 price tag makes it much more affordable than other dance fare, and the house is always packed and vocal.

Though the clear highlight this year was the appearance of not one, not two, but three much adored ballerinas two who have retired from the ballet stage the festival was also notable for its great diversity of offerings.

Opening night was especially boisterous, thanks to the Brooklyn based Streb Extreme Action, a troupe that performs high flying, injury defying feats that often include dancers slamming their bodies into the floor from nauseating heights.

Their new piece, involved not only said body slamming, but also a series of manoeuvrs aboard a huge spinning ladder. Dancers swung from its rungs and otherwise tempted fate (and bodily harm) as the ladder kept speeding up. You could have cut the tension with a knife perhaps that where came from but for the gleeful looks on the faces of the dancers, who clearly have found an outlet for their thrill seeking tendencies.

In later programs came the ballerinas. First up was Wendy Whelan, who retired from the New York City Ballet two years ago but has been busy exploring contemporary dance. A beloved New York fixture, Whelan appeared not in pointe shoes but in sexy black heels, along with black stockings and garters, topped only by a button down white shirt (which would eventually be shed, rendering her briefly topless).

Whelan performed with Edward Watson of the Royal Ballet in Arthur Pita Ballad of Mack and Ginny a tango inflected piece set to Kurt Weill Ballad from the 1928 musical Threepenny Opera. One of its more provocative sights had Watson gripping Whelan long blond hair atop her head in a tight ponytail as they danced.

A few nights later came a more classic take on doomed love and the rare appearance on a New York stage of Alina Cojocaru. The Romanian born dancer and her fiance, Johan Kobborg, originally had been due to perform Frederick Ashton and Armand along with the Bucharest National Opera Ballet. Because of their recent rift and departure from that company, the couple performed instead with the Sarasota Ballet.

The diminutive Cojocaru was her usual delicate, soulful self as she danced the acting heavy role of the fragile heroine dying of tuberculosis. (Kobborg was her stern father; her ardent lover was the Stuttgart Ballet Friedemann Vogel.)

And then, on closing weekend, came Alessandra Ferri, one of the world most popular ballerinas, still dancing at age 53 despite from American Ballet Theatre in 2007.

Ferri, who in June made a triumphant one night return to Juliet her signature role with ABT, appeared here with her favoured partner of the last few years, Herman Cornejo. On a dark stage adorned by a lighted column on one side, the two twisted and churned slowly to a new piece by choreographer Wayne McGregor.

Other highlights included everything from classical Indian dance (Shantala Shivalingappa) to a sobering meditation on human sacrifice by the South African choreographer Dada Masilo. Memorably, Demetia Hopkins Greene of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performed the powerful solo work Spanish flamenco dancer Farruquito sent a jolt of energy through the room as he whipped his feet around the stage, long hair flying and beads of sweat misting the air.

At the end, he invited each of his musicians and singers to take a spin onstage. In the spirit of the occasion, they all obliged with the audience cheering.

Top Kicker (Conversions, Penalties): Eric Elwood (112)

2005/06 Odds To Win: 100/1 (Paddy Power)

Players To Watch:

Paul Warwick: The former Australian Sevens captain really put his mark on Connacht’s Challenge Cup campaign last year. In the absence of legendary Galwegian Eric Elwood (now assistant coach) this season and injured talisman Mark McHugh for much of it, Warwick will have to help the westerners scrap for everything with the boot and his distribution from number 10.

Colm Rigney: Two seasons with Leeds Tykes will have bolstered Rigney’s game. “The prodigal son” will easily step into John O’Sullivan’s shoes at the base of the Connacht scrum, and a strong season and Heineken Cup qualification could tempt Ireland international Johnny O’Connor back to join him.

Conor McPhillips: The unluckiest man to travel to Japan in June, McPhillips was the only member of the Ireland squad not to earn some game time in the Far East. If the flying wing can rediscover the form which saw him score eleven tries in 20 Celtic League outings in 2003/04, then that Test debut should be finally his.

Coach Speak: Michael Bradley: “We were only one win away from qualifying for the Heineken Cup last season. The difference between the Borders (at the bottom) and ourselves was 20 points, while the difference between the fourth placed team and ourselves was just two wins.

How can you lead a company while changing diapers? That’s what some people asked Toms Shoes founder and CEO Blake Mycoskie when he told them he was going to take 12 weeks off when his son was born.

Mycoskie said he thought just the opposite: How could he not take the time off?

“If a dad doesn’t take it or isn’t offered it, he’s tired. He’s distracted. He’s probably making bad decisions for the business, and he’s feeling guilty he’s not at home,” Mycoskie told CNN’s Poppy Harlow on Sunday.

He added that he wanted to set an example for his employees.

Toms Shoes offers new parents at least eight weeks paid time off. It adopted the policy several years ago, but Mycoskie said he noticed that some new dads feared that taking time off would hurt their careers.

“So much of our strength comes from our families, and if we’re not investing in our families,

For companies, he added, benefits like paternity leave can also help attract talent, particularly millennials. Appealing to the next generation is “crucial” to the future of big businesses, and those workers will be looking for perks like family leave.

Stick of Lostwithiel was the first business that we visited as part of the Small is Beautiful? Project. So it seems fitting to return there in a final fieldframe. This trajectory was in large measure shaped by the floods that arrived suddenly in Lostwithiel in November 2011, shortly after our first visit, ruining many businesses. Stick, a specialist shop repairing all kinds of leather goods and selling shoes, bets, hats and walking sticks, was particularly badly hit by the floodwater, making the Graham and Rosemary Mitson without a shop or home for over a year.

The space feels welcoming and settled; certainly not like somewhere that was dramatically deluged so recently. This workbench, where Graham Mitson examines and fixes the numerous objects that customers bring to his shop, now sits squarely in the main shop space. Its design and arrangement of neatly organised implements and materials reflects the craftsman habit for the hand made and utilitarian. The brightly coloured metal and enamel Dunlop Boots advertisement, like the museum cabinet with antique shoes on the back wall of the shop, reminds the visitor that this is not simply a place to buy new things, but an opportunity to learn from accumulated knowledge of crafting and repair.

The material memories present in the shop almost two years ago seem not only present but also amplified. Like a pair of favourite shoes, Stick has been lovingly repaired; its place in the local universe restored.

The UT administration has been unable to stall these auctions. Though attempts were made earlier by sending communications to the auction houses, the administration was informed that the items have been purchased from the dealers and had all the receipts.

The auctions have fetched the auction houses millions of rupees. Most of these items were sold as scrap in Chandigarh, not fetching more than a few thousand rupees.

City advocate writes to DRI

City based advocate Ajay Jagga has written a letter to Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seeking action. The letter relates to smuggling of furniture from Chandigarh that was designed by Swiss French architect Le Corbusier and his associate and cousin Pierre Jeanneret. It also talks of at least six consignments of antique furniture shipped to a firm Sage Mercantile LLC in US between November 2014 and August 2016.

It has also come on record that importing of heritage furniture from India (especially designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret and available in Punjab) is resulting in huge profits,

Bayern have battered some of the top sides in the business in recent years, never mind the ones trying to compete with a Bundesliga powerhouse on an inferior budget.Munich have clattered Arsenal 5 1 three times on the bounce, stuck seven past Roma and battered Barcelona 7 0 over two legs on their way to winning their last big cup in style in 2013.It was Jupp Heynckes in charge back then before he headed off to tend to his farm in retirement and Pep Guardiola brought his brand of glamour to Bavaria. The wily old coach was called off the allotment to tidy up the messy end of Carlo Ancelotti’s reign. A couple of dropped league points and a pasting by PSG in the Champions League may be classed as a crisis but it didn’t last long. There were plenty of superstars in the line up with the likes of Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski strutting their stuff.Celtic players rated: Who got pass marks on a tough night for the Hoops against Bayern Munich? It wasn’t just the men on the pitch who lit up the Allianz Arena. The sensational stadium makes Blackpool Illuminations look like a 40 watt bulb in the garage. The Germans put on a incredible show before kick off, with the glowing ground plunged intodarkness and then lit again dramatically in unison with the team sheet getting bellowed out.The strobe effect was something else but so was the blinding way Bayern used the ball when the game got going. Poor Cristian Gamboa was left so dazzled by Kingsley Coman he needed a pair of prescription sunglasses. The French wide man picked up for around 30million via PSG and a loan spell at Juventus showed flashes of genius but he was far from the only one to shine.Bayern Munich 3 Celtic 0 as Germans rediscover their swagger to blow away Hoops in Champions LeagueIt was hardly a shock. The rise of the superclubs in recent years has radically changed the shape of the European game and drastically altered the expectations.Even 13 years ago when Martin O’Neill’s side led at Munich’s old home at the Olympic Stadium, there wasn’t the kind of chasm in resources as there is these days.Bayern have a side, which is the going rate for outfits with ambitions of go all the way in this competition. Which is why these one sided shows have become the group stages norm. Celtic’s aim is for third spot in the group and to stick around for the Europa League after the turn of the year.Teams outside the elite need a fairly hefty dose of good fortune to get through these nights. At first it seemed they might get it. Bayern’s early ruled out goal must’ve been inches out of the park before Thiago stuck it away.Lewandowski had the kind of penalty shout waved away that could easily have seen a ref in Europe pointing to the spot. When David Alaba ballooned one over the bar, it looked like the Hoops had used up their allowance in the opening 15 minutes.

They call it Kamloops Point now, a promontory on Isle Royale in Lake Superior near where the steamship Kamloops sank in 1927. Next Wednesday 84 years after the small freighter floundered with loss of all hands a memorial service in Thunder Bay, Ont., will honour four of the unknown sailors. Why these four and why did it take the better part of a century? Tory Tronrud, director of the Thunder Bay Museum, said it has taken that long to put the pieces together to a mystery surrounding the tragedy. Kamloops for several years now,” Tronrud explained. Kamloops was last seen Dec. 4, 1927, en route to Fort William, now Thunder Bay. Many ships were later caught in a gale, the same sort of storm on the same lake that Gordon Lightfoot sings of in The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (coincidentally, Lightfoot sang that same song in Kamloops just last week). All other vessels made it to port safely except the Kamloops. These were the days before search and rescue services or effective radio communication were established. A search didn’t begin until Dec. 12 and found no trace of the ship or its crew. Not until the spring of 1928 did a group of fisherman find the remains of several crew members who made it to shore. They almost certainly died of exposure in the harsh late fall conditions. From the 22 crew members who died in the wreck, only nine bodies were recovered. Five were identified and their remains sent to families. The remaining four were buried in an unmarked grave in Thunder Bay. As part of his research, Cameron looked into the question of the unidentified sailors. He uncovered a notice issued by Canada Steamship Lines not long after the remains were recovered,
timberland boots wheat Ceremony honours S
promising to erect a memorial. The historian approached Canada Steamship Lines a company owned by former finance minister Paul Martin and they agreed to follow through all these years later. There has been keen interest in the laying of the memorial stone, both from the public and the media, Tronrud said. “It brings the tragedy to light as well. It’s still a bit in dispute how the ship sank. Some believe the ship struck a rock and went down.” A note left by one of the crew who reached shore indicated the ship capsized. More than likely the sinking was caused by a combination of stormy weather and ice build up on freight coils of iron, probably barbed wire destined for Western ranches lashed on deck. Kamloops remained a mystery for half a century. In nautical lore, the vessel was classified as a ghost ship. Then, in 1977, a dive team located a wreck, largely intact but on its side, 90 metres down. They concluded it was the Kamloops. Due to the frigid conditions at that depth, even the cargo was still identifiable high top shoes, wire and crates of Honey Bee Molasses. Not surprisingly, ghost stories persist. And how did a canaller (small freighter) on the Great Lakes come to be named after a town on the other side of the country? The lakes, of course, are an integral part of the national transportation grid linked by rail. Fort William is a railhead and Kamloops is a hub of that network. Eventually the name Kamloops would be given to a remote shore on the other side of the country,
timberland boots wheat Ceremony honours S
recalling not the place but the ship that was its namesake.
