“He tries to work with the families. I know it’s usually in trying circumstances, but he goes out of his way to help them,” Childers said. “You can tell it’s not just a job for him, but that he really cares about the families he is dealing with.
“He’s done a good job for the county, and he will be missed.”
High said one thing he has realized is you can be supportive of people, but “you can’t take on their problems.”
“I appreciate all of the support I have gotten over the years from the public, and all of the various agencies I have worked with. They’ve help make the job easier,” High said.
Like everything, technology has changed the way things are done in the coroner’s office.
“We have electronic death certificates and everything is done online,” he said. “It makes it a lot more convenient and quicker for the families.”
High said he’s pleased with his 12 years in office.
“On every call, I have tried to be there for the families and help them through a difficult time,” High said. “I have forgotten what it was like to be normal, not to have to worry about a phone ringing. When we go to church or anywhere, we go in separate cars because I might have to leave at any time.
“I missed my 30th birthday party that my family was throwing for me. I was working a suicide in Florence, and by the time I got back everyone had gone home. I’m looking forward to having some time now for me and my family.”
