Brian and Joan were high school sweethearts married for 25 years who first met freshman year at Gross Catholic High School. He was described as a fun loving guy who always made you feel important and never left anyone out. He’s now on life support at Nebraska Medicine.Hundreds of family members and friends gathered to pray at a special rosary service dedicated to O’Neill at the St. Robert Bellarmine Church Monday evening.Rick Pane, a longtime friend, said, “We are going to pray for Brian. We’re going to pray for a miracle and we’ve got faith.”The O’Neill’s’ annual New Year’s Eve celebration at a venue in Midtown Crossing was festive one moment, then panic the next, as O’Neill, 51, started choking on a piece of meat.A doctor sitting next to him used the Heimlich Maneuver,
but had no luck. Four other friends also tried to dislodge the meat. Finally, as a last resort, the doctor, performed an emergency tracheotomy using a knife.Brother Mike O’Neill said, “No one should ever have to say goodbye to their brother or a loved one in this fashion. It’s just awful, just awful.”His friends call O’Neill, “The Mayor,” since they say he knows just about everyone, and he also coached youth basketball and baseball teams at St. Robert’s School.”He’s a great guy, a great family guy with two twin boys. He has a great wife, just a good family, ” said brother in law Paul Miller.Family and friends draw strength from each other and strength from their friend and hope the power of prayer will heal O’Neill. Pane said, “We are asking the community to take a minute and say a prayer for Brian and his family.””You should never leave home without telling everyone you love them, because you never know when something like this is going to happen and if that will be the last time you talk to them.
