Sen. Joseph Boncore, D Winthrop, is the new chairman of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Transportation and Sen. Eric Lesser, D Longmeadow is the new vice chairman.

Boncore replaces Sen. Thomas McGee, D Lynn, who resigned when he won an election to become mayor of Lynn.

“The need for effective and efficient transportation intersects with the need for affordable housing, economic opportunity, and social justice,” Chandler said in a statement. “Our transit systems are the central arteries connecting our Commonwealth’s cities and towns to each other. Senator Boncore and Senator Lesser will bring strong leadership to the challenges we face at a time when transportation is a paramount issue on Beacon Hill and in the minds of everyday commuters.”

Boncore said he believes Massachusetts requires a new revenue mechanism to make necessary investments in transportation. “The Commonwealth’s transportation system is the driver that ensures our economic success,” Boncore said. “Whether by road, rail or water, our infrastructure connects us to jobs, homes, schools and goods; ensuring continued growth.”

Lesser has been a leading voice in calling for a new Springfield to Boston high speed rail line.

“Having a high quality, reliable transportation network is about more than making sure the trains run on time,” Lesser said. “Our transit system should serve the public’s needs, and this ultimately means ensuring equal access to opportunities and connecting our communities across the Commonwealth.”

timberland returns Er helps rally UMaine men’s basketball team past Binghamton

Senior guard Ilker Er scored a game high 23 points, including eight straight during a critical 14 0 spurt in the second half, as the University of Maine men’s basketball team erased an eight point deficit in the final eight minutes to beat Binghamton 76 73 at Vestal, New York, Saturday afternoon.

Junior guard Aaron Calixte scored 18 points and Isaiah White had 13 points for UMaine (4 13, 1 1 America East).

Calixte scored 15 of his points in the second half and Er had 14 as the Black Bears outscored the Bearcats 49 39 to overcome a seven point halftime deficit.

Er went 10 for 14 from the floor, including 2 for 5 on 3 pointers, and Calixte was 4 for 6, including 2 for 4 from the 3 point arc. Show tossed in 20 points for Binghamton (9 7, 0 1 AE) and Thomas Bruce contributed 12.

UMaine trailed 61 53 with 7:58 remaining when White hit a 3 pointer off a Calixte feed to trigger the run of 14 unanswered points.

Er converted a traditional three point play after rebounding a Vernon Lowndes Jr. miss and Er then made a jumper to tie it.

Er gave UMaine the lead for good with a 3 off an Ilija Stojiljkovic pass before Calixte capped the run with a conventional three point play.

A Thomas dunk with 3:05 left ended a scoring drought that lasted 4:53 and saw the Bearcats miss six shots and turn the ball over three times.

Binghamton went on a 12 7 run and pulled within one on two Show free throws with three seconds left but Calixte was immediately fouled and sank both free throws to sew it up.

“Ilker stepped up and made big plays for us all day,” said UMaine head coach Bob Walsh in a news release on the UMaine website. “Down the stretch, we were mentally tough and that allowed guys like Ilker and Aaron to make some huge buckets.

“I’m really proud of the belief we showed, especially after another difficult result on Wednesday. We just refuse to give in,” added Walsh, referring to Wednesday’s 71 70 loss during which UMaine erased a 20 point second half deficit but lost on a late 3 pointer.

Calixte handed out four assists while Stojiljkovic grabbed a career and game high 12 rebounds.

Show had four steals to complement his offense and Bruce hauled in a team high seven rebounds with three steals for Binghamton. Willy Rodriguez and Tyler Stewart each scored nine points and Everson Davis had eight to go with four rebounds and three assists.

There a certain type of powder that only comes around every once in a while.

In the West, there never really any worry about it snowing. That just a fact of life in the Rockies.

But there something different about the powder that blankets a mountain when the temperatures drop beyond a certain point and the word suddenly seems very specific.

Usually, deep freezes mean the snow slows down a bit, but that not what happened last week at Fernie Mountain Resort.

the sort of snow that the locals can just wipe off their car and go, no problem, said Matt Mosteller, the senior vice president of marketing resort experience at Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, which owns Fernie. you on the mountain, it really the perfect powder.

But the past week was something special, even for those lucky enough to live in the idyllic mountain town and who can drive the quick couple minutes up to the ski resort on a truly epic powder day.

With temperatures hovering around what can credibly be called too cold last week, though, even the most hardened skier or snowboarder must have been having second thoughts about going on the mountain.

The problem was that sweet,

glorious powder we were talking about? The truly fluffy white stuff? It was falling hard.

Despite the frigid conditions, Fernie was hit with 45 cm of fresh power over the past seven days, which brought the season total to 428 cm.

With temperatures now jumping up to a much more tolerable level, it means that Fernie is something of a winter wonderland for skiers and snowboarders who have survived the busy and frigid holiday season and are eager to make the most of the good times ahead.

And Fernie happens to be a pretty ideal place to spend a day ripping down the slopes.

If you happen to be an advanced skier or snowboarder, there are few mountains that provide the variety of expert terrain that Fernie does.

But while Fernie most challenging runs are what made it famous, there a lot more to the resort than deep powder and extreme terrain.

bowl, there are green runs at the bottom, Mosteller said, explaining that families with a variety of levels of skiers can make it to the top of Fernie lifts and then go their separate ways for a couple minutes before meeting up and skiing back to the bottom of the mountain.

And at the bottom of the mountain happens to lie some of the best ski in, ski out accommodations that guests can find anywhere in Western Canada, along with the Griz Pub which consistently ranks among the best ski pubs on most publications lists.

There also the Town of Fernie itself, which is an attraction unto itself and which guests who stay on mountain now have better access to thanks to increased hours this season for the shuttle bus that runs to and from the resort.

EOG Resources has quietly leased more than 130,000 acres in Avoyelles, St. Landry and Pointe Coupee parishes and has begun fracking its first well in the Louisiana section of the oil rich Austin Chalk.

The formation stretches around 600 miles from the Mexico border through Texas and across the middle of Louisiana. But it has been 20 years since the Louisiana piece of the formation has seen much in the way of leasing activity. EOG’s first well, in Avoyelles Parish, was drilled 16,700 feet deep with a horizontal section a little over 5,000 feet long.

Rumors are already running rampant about how many wells the company plans to drill and how much the first well is producing something that happened even before the well was drilled, said Kirk Barrell, president of New Orleans based Amelia Resources. But it will be weeks before the initial production numbers are available and months before EOG is comfortable with the wells’ decline curve, the method oil producers use to estimate reserves and predict production.

“It’s way too early to speculate, but I’d say the industry shares my confidence in EOG. They’re so good at what they do. If anybody can do it, they’re the ones,” Barrell said. “This is a blessing and gift to Louisiana to have them show up, without question.”

EOG officials could not be reached for comment.

Interestingly, the Eagles 14H 1 is on EOG’s shallowest acreage. The company has leases where the chalk’s oil lies 19,000 feet below ground, Barrell said.

In addition, the Austin Chalk lies 800 feet to 1,200 feet above the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, he said. Success in the Austin Chalk could possibly rejuvenate activity in the TMS.

Activity in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, the oil rich formation that straddles Louisiana’s midsection, dried up when oil prices plummeted three years ago. At the time, the TMS wells were the most expensive in the country at $10 million to $11 million. His company is assembling acreage in the formation.

However,EOG has been testing its acreage in Texas over the last year, and the results appear promising. In the first half of the year, EOG completed 14 wells in the Texas portion of the Austin Chalk. The 30 day initial production rates for those wells averaged more than the equivalent of more than 2,600 barrels of oil.

Barrel described the wells in Karnes County as “amazing,” with some initially testing at 9,000 barrels per day.

In a blog post on Seeking Alpha, analyst Nikolai Gouliaev estimated the initial investment for EOG’s recent Texas Chalk wells at $4.6 million, and the return on investment at more than 200 percent

FLORENCE The downtown entertainment district has been finalized by the City Council, and the first weekend for the district will begin March 16.

The council on Tuesday night voted to establish a district that extends from Pine Street in the west to the intersection of East Tennessee Street and East College Street. Tuscaloosa Street is the northern boundary.

The addition to the earlier ordinance that established the district sets the hours, days and requirement for the use of blue plastic cups with a stick on logo that will be approved later. The district, which allows restaurant patrons to take alcoholic beverage onto sidewalks, will be in effect one weekend a month, but not on the weekends of First Fridays.

The vote was not unanimous. Councilman Blake Edwards voted against it, and Councilwoman Michelle Eubanks abstained from the vote, leaving four council members to approve it.

“I don’t see the need for an entertainment district,” Edwards said. “We will have to have added police protection. Does that mean we are expecting problems? I don’t see it helping the city.”

During the public comment portion of the meeting, John Sheppard said encouraging people to drink in public is not a good idea.

“We don’t need any more alcohol in this town. We already have enough substance abuse,” he said.

Sheppard said he lost a spouse to a drunken driver, and allowing people to walk the streets with beverages will only make drunken driving a bigger problem.

Councilman Andy Betterton said he understands those concerns, but noted the council had worked extensively with Police Chief Ron Tyler before making a decision.

“I think we have crafted this very well,” Betterton said. “I’m willing to give this a try. He also said an entertainment district is not a license for public drunkenness. Anyone who is intoxicated will be arrested, he said.
